As we become more drawn to organic or natural products, we shine a light on often misguided preconceptions about nature identical and synthetics and their use in perfumes.

A Perfumer has hundreds of raw materials available on their perfume organ to select from. Among them, there is a wide range of both natural and nature identical materials. All though our Parfum's are mostly natural, we use both natural plant based and nature identical synthetic musk materials in our perfumes. Obtaining the deer musk requires killing the endangered animal but luckily in todays world nearly all musk fragrance used in perfumery is created synthetically.

Some companies claim their perfumes are 100% natural, however when examining the ingredients, such as musk, sea or marine notes and certain fruits such as apple or cherry in their perfumes, this is an indicator that nature identical or synthetic ingredients have also been used, as they can not be extracted naturally.

Why use nature identical ingredients..

  • They provide an extremely diversified palette of fragrances : There are only around 500 natural raw materials existing, while synthetics provide thousands of different scents with new ones being developed each year. Many of the most popular notes utilized in today’s perfumes cannot be extracted naturally : certain flowers such as lily of the valley, blue bells, lilac, most fruits like peach, apple and cherry, iodized or sea notes…
  • To recreate certain natural notes which are complex or unethical to source due to various agricultural factors such as climate, water consumption, over-exploitation of land, or that can be environmentally damaging to produce.
  • To protect our animals : musk and civet are among the most legendary notes in perfume, and were historically procured from animals. Today, we can recreate these special fragrances without interfering with any unsuspecting beavers.
  • And finally, to limit risks of allergy. It may be surprising to learn that natural raw materials are far more likely to cause an allergic reaction than their synthetic counterparts, as it is much easier to identify and remove any potential allergens from a controlled synthetic ingredient. I bet you didn't expect this, am I right?

Nature identical, Synthetics and Perfume, is a match made in history!

The utilisation of synthetic molecules in perfumery dates from the end of the 19th century – the perfume industry as we know it would not exist today without these products. The most celebrated perfumes of the 20th century were the result of a harmonious blend of natural and synthetic materials. By limiting a perfumer to only a natural palette of raw materials, compositions can often become heavy, heady, and lack refinement. Adding synthetic materials allows the Perfumer to lighten, diversify, and refine their fragrances.

Still today, the savoir-faire of the perfumer in creating a unique, original fragrance, is to find the ideal equilibrium between the nobility of natural essences, and the diversity of nature identical and synthetic materials.

This may come as a surprise to many, but both natural and synthetic fragrances can contain allergens.. except when it states on the perfume ingredients label that the fragrance is indeed allergen free. The fact is that natural essential oils can still contain allergens. Just like some people who have allergic reactions (Hayfever) to certain 'natural' flowers in the summer.

Some companies like their customers to believe that Natural means allergen free when this is simply not true.

Please also beware of some bloggers who scaremonger people with their claims that all synthetic ingredients are bad and that only natural ones are good.. these people (bloggers) are simply not qualified in cosmetic chemistry to make these claims and assume that natural fragrance would prevent all allergic reactions such as headaches, etc. The fact is that both natural and synthetic fragrance ingredients can cause, for example: a headache in some individuals with a sensitivity to certain ingredients.

Allergens are listed on all perfume ingredients labels of any designer or niche brand including ours. Usually an alcohol based perfume label will start with the words: Alcohol Denat, Parfum, Aqua .. the words that follow are a list of ingredients that contain possible allergens that have to be legally listed on the perfume label, if they are present at 0.001% or higher. (Most people believe these are simply a list of ingredients, but this is not the case. We simply want to educate our customers about what is listed on all perfume packaging labels, no matter which brand it is).

If a brand does not include an ingredients label on their product be wary and ask yourself what are they hiding! They are also breaking the law by not supplying a compliant product label.

The UK & EU are heavily regulated when it comes to the listing of allergens.

The listing of allergens does not mean that you will be affected. It is merely required by law for these to be listed on perfume labels if they are present at 0.001% or higher.

Every perfume brand including the big designer ones will have some of these allergens listed on their perfume packaging.

(If a perfume that you have purchased, elsewhere in the past does not include a label on the box, that company is breaking the law and possibly keeping you in the dark about what's really in their perfumes.)

All our fragrances are made by hand to our private formulas including natural sustainable and nature identical fragrance ingredients sourced in the perfume capital of the world, Grasse France. The same ingredients that leading French perfume houses use.

We don't use mass produced syrup type fragrance oils in our perfumes, like those of heavily promoted copy/dupe fragrance companies. One of the reasons why we wouldn't use this type of fragrance is because we don't know what's in them. This type of fragrance is mostly used for the making of fragranced candles, wax melts or air-freshener for the home.

We use alcohol naturally made from the fermentation of sugar beets.

We use a light biodegradable non-sticky sprayable natural oil base that dries quickly, revealing the fragrance.

We offer a choice of natural or tinted fragrances. Our perfumes are tinted with natural anti-oxidant rich ingredients such as natpure pigments derived from red radish, beetroot, purple sweet potato, spirulina and turmeric. It is not possible to tint our alcohol free fragrances.

Not intentionally, no. We are a niche brand, not owned by a large cosmetics company. We own our fragrance formulas. However we have had a customer who said that the one they decided on smelled similar to that of a designer brand but apparently it was "overall 10 times better and lasted longer" (customers words), despite our ingredients and fragrance notes being totally different to those of that brand.

Most designer brands mainly use synthetic ingredients, where ours include natural and nature identical ingredients and are that of a true extrait parfum strength with 25% & 28% of pure fragrance added to every bottle. The designer fragrance industry is known to use between 15% and 20% of fragrance in their fragrance preparations.
